As part of the Pact4Youth project, five expert-led masterclasses were held in Greece, aimed at empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the construction sector. Organised by Cyprus partners PEDMEDE and U-studies, these events offered participants valuable insights into innovative practices and sustainability in construction, with a strong emphasis on the circular economy, environmental protection, and cutting-edge technologies.

Sustainable Procurement by Applying Circular Economy Principles

The first masterclass, held on 3 April 2024, introduced participants to the core principles of the circular economy. The session, led by experts from Mesogeos S.A., covered key topics such as reducing waste, maximising resource efficiency, and green public procurement. The event, which took place in person, saw the participation of professionals from various roles within the construction industry, including architects and consultants.

Innovation Practices in Facility Management

On 10 April 2024, the second masterclass focused on innovative practices in facility management. Organised in collaboration with Planet S.A., participants were introduced to advanced technologies such as IoT, AI, and sensors that enhance the efficiency and sustainability of construction projects. The event provided valuable insights into the methodologies used to improve maintenance processes and tracking systems in facility management.

Network Management: Innovation and Sustainability

The third masterclass, held on 18 April 2024, explored how smart technologies and information and communication technologies (ICT) can optimise waste management and recycling. Led by Mesogeos Digital S.A., the event introduced innovative solutions designed to improve the collection, transportation, and processing of recyclable materials, offering participants a glimpse into the future of waste management in construction.

Innovative Practices in Reducing Environmental Footprint

Held on 9 May 2024, this masterclass, delivered by ERGOKAT, focused on the latest advancements in renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal energy. Mr. Banias Anastasios, an environmentalist at ERGOKAT, emphasised the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and implementing sustainable construction practices. Participants also learned about environmental monitoring systems and standards crucial to the industry.

Innovative Refurbishment Technologies to Protect Cultural Heritage

The final masterclass, conducted online on 28 May 2024, centred on innovative refurbishment technologies for the protection of cultural heritage. Mr. Anastasios from ERGOKAT shared valuable insights into retrofitting projects designed to preserve Greece’s cultural heritage, highlighting concrete examples of how innovative approaches are applied to protect historical sites while adhering to sustainability principles.

These five masterclasses successfully provided SMEs in the Greek construction industry with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the challenges of sustainability and innovation in an ever-evolving sector.
