It is essential that counsellors update their knowledge about the sector to be able to provide relevant information to the students, since they will not choose something that they don’t know.

  • Variety of roles and specialisations: construction offers a wide range of roles, from engineers and architects to skilled workers in different trades. Mentoring should help individuals identify their skills and interests to find the area that best suits them.
  • Specific training: the sector requires technical skills and specialised knowledge. Educational guidance can help students choose training programmes that align with the demands of the sector and the skills needed.
  • Technological evolution: construction is undergoing a digital transformation with the use of new technologies such as modular and off-site construction, augmented reality, 3D printing, etc. Guidance would help to disseminate information of these developments and prepare users for the skills of the future.
  • Job security and well-being: educational and career guidance can also include information on workplace safety, safe work practices and wellness in an industry that can present physical and safety challenges.

The construction sector has a number of characteristics that educational and employment counsellors need to be aware of in order to be able to offer an optimal guidance service to all those young individuals interested in learning more about this industry:
