As part of the ‘Pact4Youth’ project, five specialised masterclasses were organised in Cyprus, aimed at enhancing the skills of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the construction sector. These events, coordinated by the Education Center “O Oikodomos” (KEPO) and the Federation of Cyprus Building Contractors’ Association (OSEOK), provided invaluable insights into various aspects of construction and sustainability.
Management of Solid Waste from Construction and Demolition
The first masterclass took place on 10 May 2024 and focused on effective management of waste in the construction and demolition sectors. Led by Mrs. Anthi Charalambous, a sustainability expert and founder of the environmental non-profit KyklOIKOdromio, the session attracted professionals from SMEs in various roles, including civil engineers, architects, and site supervisors.
Green Constructions and Modern Trends in their Design and Construction
Held on 31 May 2024, the second masterclass explored the latest trends in sustainable design and construction. Led by Mr. Apostolos Michopoulos from the University of Cyprus, it provided insights into green construction practices, offering participants strategies to integrate energy-efficient solutions into their projects.
Health and Safety in the Construction Industry
On 6 June 2024, the third session, conducted online, centred on health and safety protocols in the construction industry. Mr. Panagiotis Loizias, an approved Safety and Health Consultant, provided essential guidance on workplace safety, with a focus on regulatory compliance and risk management.
Good Practices for Construction Contract Management
The fourth masterclass, held on 13 June 2024 online, focused on optimising contract management practices. Mr. Georgios Christoforou, director of KEPO, shared valuable advice on how to manage construction contracts effectively, ensuring better project outcomes for SMEs.
Adaptation to the Principles of Circular Economy Management
The final masterclass, taking place on 14 June 2024, covered the growing importance of circular economy principles in construction. Mrs. Charalambous returned to lead this session, which aimed to guide participants in adapting their practices to more sustainable, resource-efficient business models.
These masterclasses represent a key initiative in supporting the professional development of construction SMEs, equipping them with essential knowledge and skills to navigate an increasingly complex and sustainable industry.
